Religious Places in Delhi

Delhi is home to many religious places that has become popular for being a spiritual wonder. The religious places in Delhi are extremely beautiful and also known for their historic significance.

Lotus Temple
The Lotus Temple or Bahai Temple is situated in South Delhi atop the Kalkaji hill. The construction of the temple was started in 1980 and completed in 1986. Built of Makarana marble of Rajasthan, the lotus shape temple is set amidst picturesque pools and landscaped garden. The Lotus temple belongs to the Bahai faith, which is the youngest religion of the world. The Bahai faith is broad in its outlook and believes "one religion one soul all in one." According to Bahai faith the world is one- the sons of the world is one, all beings are one and that one is human being. People of all the religions are allowed to visit the temple and pray or meditate silently according to their own religion. The Prayer Hall has the capacity of 1300 devouts at a time to undergo meditation. The temple looks very spectacular in the evening when it is flood lit.

Jama Masjid
Jama Masjid is located near the Red Fort in Old Delhi. Built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in 1658, Jama Masjid is the biggest mosque in India. Considered as the replica of Moti Masjid in Agra, Jama Masjid is also callled Masjid-e-Jahanuma. Made of red sandstone, the Jama Masjid is the last architectural extravagance of Shah Jahan. This mosque has three gateways, four angle towers and two 40 metre high minarets. These minarets are built in alternate strips of red sandstone and white marble. One can go to the top of minarets and have a birds eye view of the city. The east gate was meant for Royal family and Shah Jahan used to come here on Fridays and every festival. The north and south gate was meant for common people. The original prayer hall is 200 ft in length and 120 ft in width, with the height of 135 ft. Its spacious courtyard can accommodate 20,000 of people at a time. People of different religion is not allowed between 12.30 - 14.00. If you desire to go inside the temple, you should go bare-footed, head covered and properly dressed.

Lakshmi Narayan TempleLakshmi Narayan Temple
Lakshmi Narayan Temple or the Birla Mandir is conveniently located at Mandir Marg road in Central Delhi. This temple was founded by Raja Baladeo Birla in 1938 and inaugurated by Mahatama Gandhi. Lakshmi Narayan Temple is dedicated to Lord Narayana (the preserver) and Lakshmi (goddess of wealth). Built in Orissan style pf architecture, the temple has a number of idols of various Hindu deities. Mythological episodes are narrated on its walls in excellent carvings. This temple is also noted for its fantastic sculptures panels, wall paintings and frescoes done by artists from Jaipur. The temple welcomes people of all faiths, but one must remove the shoes before entering the the courtyard and further on.

Hazrat Nizam-ud-din Auliya
The tomb of the Sufi saint, Nizam-ud-din Auliya is situated across the road from Humayun's Tomb. He died in 1325 at the age of 92 and was cremated here. Hazrat Nizam-ud-din Auliya is built in Lodhi sculpture having a white marble tomb at its peak. In the main graveyard there is lattice and arch type structure. Apart from Hazrat Nizamuddin's tomb there are other tombs of Mirza Ghalib, Amir Khusru, sculpture Isha Khan and the Jahanara, daughter of Shah Jahan. The sculptural monument was built in 1325 and was rebuilt in 1562. On every Thursday, after sunset Qawalli is being held out side the main shrine.

ISKCON Temple, New DelhiISKCON Temple
ISKCON Temple was built in the year 1998 on a hilly place. Dedicated to Lord Krishna, the ISKCON Temple is one of the largest temple complexes in India. The temple is a wonderful specimen of contemporary temple architecture.

Chattarpur Mandir
This temple complex is situated beyond the Qutub Minar in Mehrauli. Chattrapur Mandir is dedicated to Goddess Durga. Built in South Indian architectural style, the temple spreads over a large area surrounded by landscaped gardens. The temple is visited by large number of devotees throughout the year. 'Navrathri' is the main festival of the temple, during the 'navaratras' devotees throng the temple from near and far.

Bala Hanuman Temple
Bala Hanuman Temple is located at Baba Kharak Singh Marg near Connaught Place. Built in 1724, this small temple is very famous among the devotees of Lord Hanuman.

St. James Church
St. James Church is situated in North Delhi close to Kashmiri Gate. The oldest church in the capital was built by James Skinner and consecrated in 1836. St. James Church is built in the Western classical design with a Greek cross plan. Three of arms of the cross have porticoes, while one arm contains the altar. This church is open only on Sundays.
