Delhi is home to a wide range of museums that house a wide variety of fascinating items. Some of the most popular museum are :
National Museum
The National Museum is located on Janpath just south of Rajpath. The museum is one of the treasure houses of the glorious past of India. The National Museum has a huge collection of Indian bronzes, terra cotta, wood sculptures, excavated items many of which dating back to the Mauryan period (2nd and 3rd century B.C). In addition the museum exhibits items of the Vijaynagar period in South India, miniature and mural paintings and costumes of the various tribal peoples. The museum has an exclusive section for the Harrapa (Indus Valley Civilization) collection. Beside the regular sections, the museum organizes regular exhibition on different themes. A film show is organized in the auditorium of the museum every day except Mondays. The National Museum is definitely worth visiting and it is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m but closed on Mondays.

National Rail Museum Located at Chanakya Puri, the National Rail Museum was built as per plan of the British architect M G Satto on 1957. The museum has a unique collection of rail engines and locomotives. The collection of the museum include Fairy Queen of 1855 (the oldest steam engine of the world) and even the skull of an elephant who struck a mail train in 1894. Other interesting collections include the Saloon car of the Maharaja of Baroda (1886), the carriage of the Maharaja of Mysore, the cabin of the Prince of Walers (1876) and the carriage in which the ashes of Mahatama Gandhi was carried in 1948.
The Rail Museum vividly displays the evolution of Indian Rail from steam engine to present era. The museum is open from 9.30 a.m to 7.30 p.m from 1st May to 15 July and 10.30 a.m to 5. 30 p.m for the rest of the year. It is closed on Mondays.
Nehru Museum
Nehru Museum is situated to the south of Rashtrapati Bhawan on Teen Murti Road. The residence of Jawahar Lal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of Indian has been converted into a museum. The museum has a collection of prizes got by Nehru and many other items and documents related to his life. The photographs of Nehru is an added attraction to the museum. The sound and light show about Nehru's life and the India's freedom movement is organized here during the tourist season. The museum is open all week days from 10.00 a.m to 5 p.m except Mondays. The Nehru Planetarium is also situated within the Teen Murti compound. The planetarium gives an overview of the Indian Space programme.
Tibbet Museum
The Tibbet Mueum is at 16 Jorbagh, near the Oberoi hotel. This small museum has a fascinating collection of items which were brought out of Tibbet when Dalai Lama fled before the Chinese. There is a shop selling a wide range of Tibetian handicrafts. The museum is open 9.30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2.30 p.m to 6 p.m between April and September. For rest of the year the museum is open 9.00 a.m. to 1 p.m and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The museum is closed on Sundays.
Indira Memorial Museum
Indira Memorial Museum is at 1 Safdarjung Road. Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her own body guard on 31st Oct, 1984, a glass cage has covered the spot where her body fell down. The blood-stained saree and other dress materials of Indira are preserved here. Photographs of Indira are also exhibited in the museum.
International Dolls Museum
The unique museum of dolls is located in Nehru House on Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg. The museum displays more than 6000 variety of dolls brought from 85 different countries. These dolls depict the tradition and culture of their respective region. Over one third of the dolls are from India and Indian culture has been projected in the fashion of dolls. The museum is open from 10 am to 6 pm daily except Mondays.
Crafts Museum
The Crafts Museum is situated at the Aditi Pavilion of Pragati Maidan Ground. The museum contains a good collection of traditional Indian crafts in textiles, metal, wood and ceramics. Opening hours are 9.30 a.m to 4.30 p.m daily, closed on Sundays.
Museum of Natural History
The museum of Natural History is located opposite the Nepalese Embassy on Barakhamba Road. The museum has a collection of fossils and a few stuffed animals and birds. It is open all week days except Mondays.
Gandhi Darshan & Gandhi National Museum
The museum is located across the Rajghat. It has a collection of items related to Mahatama Gandhi's life.
